Arrow Shaft Selection

Selecting the proper arrow shaft for your bow is a key step toward optimizing your shooting experience.

Determine your Draw Length
  • Draw back an arrow to full draw and have someone mark the arrow at the point it passes the back side (far side) of the bow.
  • Measure the arrow from the deepest part of the nock groove to the mark on the arrow.  This is your draw length.
  • It is best to take this draw length measurement several times and take the average measurement.
Determine your Arrow Length (for cutting)
  • When ordering arrow shafts to be cut to a specific length, we recommend adding 1"-2" to your draw length.  This added clearance will help protect your finger from sharp broadheads and avoid contact with the arrow shelf.

Determine Actual Peak Bow Weight
  • Knowing your actual peak bow weight is important for selecting the correct 'spine' for your arrow shaft.  Even if your bow is marked 45# @ 28", it is important to know the actual bow weight at your specific draw length.  Each inch of draw length will add 2-3 lbs. of additional weight.

Spine Recommendation Chart

The chart below represents general 'rule-of-thumb' guidelines for shaft spine selection.  Please note, these guidelines are recommendations only —ultimately spine selection must be determined by each archer based on individual preference.
  • Using your specific 'Arrow Length' and 'Actual Peak Bow Weight' (described above), review the Spine Chart below to determine the recommended spine for your shaft selection.
  • You will also need to determine the point weight (field point or broadhead) you plan to use.
  • If your arrow shaft is over 1/2" more than the closest inch column shown on chart, round up to the next inch column.  Example, if your arrow length measures 28.5", use the 29" column to determine spine.
